Tasty Bakery is a no-frills bakery tucked into Convoy Street’s vibrant Asian dining corridor in San Diego. This spot specializes in traditional Chinese and Vietnamese-style pastries and buns, carving out a niche for people looking for authentic flavors that veer away from the more common offerings found at larger chain bakeries.

Visitors usually come with a plan to grab savory or sweet handheld treats—items like meat pies filled with well-seasoned pork and onions, flaky beef puffs, and an array of soft, generously sized buns such as pork, red bean, and the less typical pandan durian cake. The pastries strike a balance between tender flakiness and chewiness, making them practical for a quick snack or an easy breakfast on the go.

The atmosphere is straightforward and unpretentious, reflecting that old-school neighborhood bakery vibe. There's a sense that the staff, likely connected to the family owners, know their regulars and take pride in crafting pastries that recall mom-and-pop shops from San Francisco Chinatown or Vietnamese bakeries back home. It’s the kind of place where you can stop by midday or during a weekend morning rush and find the shelves stocked with both standard favorites and less common treats like durian meat chunks or cocktail buns.

Tasty Bakery tends to draw locals who appreciate traditional Asian pastries without the elevated prices or trendy presentation of larger chains. It’s ideal for those craving a satisfying, authentic bite during a day exploring Convoy Street or for anyone searching for nostalgic tastes that aren’t mass-produced. Since some specialties can sell out quickly, early visits especially on weekends might reward you with the freshest and most diverse selections.

Overall, this bakery feels like a practical local staple—a solid stopover for a quick, savory or sweet bakery fix amidst the broader Asian food scene of San Diego’s Convoy neighborhood.

The pork meat pie is so well made pastry soft flaky and chew fill with well seasoned pork onions. One of the best on the go treats. The meat pie reminds me of New Zealand.

We found a gem! We live in Arizona and haven’t been able to find bean cakes anywhere. Saw a review for Tasty Bakery in San Diego. Said it was close to San Francisco Chinatown food, and since we were in the area, went by to check it out. Hubby has been craving bean cakes and we found them here! We wanted a dozen, but she only had ten left so we bought all ten. We bought a few coconut cakes too. The BBQ pork bun was huge and filled with deliciousness. Bought a couple of coconut custard buns too. I used to get those at a bakery in San Francisco on my way to work. We’d drive to San Diego just to come here for bean cakes!!

This bakery reminds me of your SF Chinatown mom and pop bakery good. They make cakes and all my favorite buns. I love the cocktail buns, pork buns and still need to try their steamed buns. They aren't as pricey as 85* bakery and pretty big size buns. I recommend stopping by and try them out!

Was looking for a red bean bun and found this place. Very impressed with the variety of breads, cakes and buns (bao buns) here. They have Asian flavors that are not easily found in other Asian bakeries like pandan and of course they also have staples like taro, red bean, pork buns etc. On the weekend, they'd have special pastry (I'd have to come back and check them out) and they also sell some drinks like Vietnamese coffee and milk tea. The lady behind the counter was nice and friendly. Bring cash if you don't want to pay the 3% service charge.

This bakery is small but feels they have pretty authentic Cantonese style pastries! I had a Vietnamese Bao bun and a lotus stuffing pastry, both of them are delicious. The aunt works here is so kind and friendly, she helped me to heat the Bao so I could eat right after. I recommend here!

Good Asian bakery. Got an Egg Custard Bun, Pineapple Taro Bun, and a Coconut Bun. Everything was very fresh and tasty. The fillings seem to be added before baking instead of after, so they are less than expected.

Finally we got to visit and see what this bakery offers. Oftentimes, when we want to swing by its already closed by 5pm. Its a small bakery that offers similar breads from what you see at 85' only this one feels more homey than mass produced. Today was specifically looking for mocha cake. However, i found coffee cake so that should be similar. Am also trying the strawberry cake. Wanted to try some cookies next time. No more pork floss during our visit at 4:30pm. But they still have couple of meat pies.
